What is the energy balance of electrofuels produced through power-to-fuel integration with biogas facilities?

The need to reduce the climate impact of transport sector has led an increasing interest in utilisation alternative fuels. Producing advanced fuels through integration anaerobic digestion and power-to-fuel technologies may offer a solution greenhouse gas emissions from difficult decarbonise modes transport, such as heavy goods vehicles, shipping, commercial aviation, while also offering wider system benefits. This paper investigates energy balance (power-to-methane, power-to-methanol, power-to-Fischer-Tropsch fuels) production integrated with biogas facility co-digesting grass silage dairy slurry. Through power-to-methane digestion, increase gross 62.6% was found. Power-to-methanol increased by 50% yield 32%. parasitic demand for hydrogen highlighted most significant factor facilities. Consuming electricity that would otherwise have been curtailed optimising process were identified key improving energetic efficiency all configurations. However, broad cross-sectoral benefits overarching cascading circular economy system, providing electrical grid stability utilising waste resources, must be considered comprehensive perspective on power-to-fuel.
